Laird Hamilton, a professional surfing champion, blames women for shark attacks -- specifically their periods.
California has seen a recent increase in attacks. Hamilton's statement was an attempt to downplay the occurrences.
“The chances of you getting bit are greater than you getting struck by lightning” on a sunny day, the surfer said ... with the exception of periods. “It's kind of like running around with a lightning rod and wondering why you were struck by lightning.”
There has been no scientific correlation between women on their periods and shark attacks. In fact, an Australian report found that 1132 people have been bitten since 1941 and only 64 were women, though that might have more to do with men's recreation choices than gender.
