Video game scholarships are now a thing

The University of Utah will begin offering scholarships for competitive video gaming later this year.

As the months go by, additional teams playing other video games will be added to the varsity "esports" lineup. Funding for the program will come directly from Utah’s Entertainment Arts & Engineering department. No financial aid will come from the school’s $70 million sports programs.

Gamers on Utah’s "League of Legends" team will all receive partial scholarships at first, while the long-term plan is to offer full scholarships to as many as 35 gamers.
