What is ‘whataboutism’? Learn the partisan trick being used by the left and the right

Liberals hate Trump so much that their outrage is no longer believable, but is the right any better? On Tuesday’s “Pat & Stu,” Pat Gray and Stu Burguiere talked about the demise of principles on both the left and the right, wondering when people lost their standards.

National Review editor Jonah Goldberg pointed out recently that you can use “whataboutism,” which means going back through history to show double standards in politics – just as long as you follow one rule.

“The trick is holding on to your standards,” Stu paraphrased. For both liberals and conservatives these days, “there’s no need to hold on to your own standard anymore,” he said.

Democrats were crying for former FBI director James Comey to be fired only to turn around and attack President Donald Trump when he fired Comey. Republicans have been making excuses for Trump that contradict what they were saying when former President Barack Obama was in office.

“There’s no virtue in pointing out someone also does what you’re doing,” Stu said. “So what? ‘Hey, they failed morally, like me!’”

“I would never have believed that the right was like this and, wow … they are just as bad as the left on hypocrisy,” Pat said.
