Harry Reid to elaborate on ‘why would we do that?’-child cancer question

Update: Breaking news related to a shooting near Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., preempted the Reid interview. It may air later.

Just in from CNN:

CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash will sit down with Sen. Harry Reid to discuss the federal government shutdown and his response to Bash’s question during a press conference yesterday. This interview will first air Thursday in the 3 p.m. ET hour on CNN.

Reid caught fire Wednesday when he was asked by Bash if he would support a piecemeal approach to funding the government that included allocations for the National Institute of Health, which provides clinical trials for cancer patients.

“But if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?” Bash asked.

“Why would we want to do that?” Reid said. “I have 1,100 people at Nellis Air Force base that are sitting home. They have a few problems of their own.”

The federal government has been shut down for nearly three days.
