Are Comey and McCabe fighting over who is the bigger liar?

Things are getting ugly in the rhetorical battle between former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, both of whom were fired by the Trump administration and both of whom are accused of lying under oath.

Mr. Comey, who has received a plethora of media coverage recently promoting his book, is sparring with Mr. McCabe over his leadership while at the helm of the FBI. Both men have accused each other of making misleading statements about their tenures at the Bureau.

Could they both be correct?

According to several Republican members of Congress, there’s mounting evidence that Comey lied to Congress about the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server.

On Thursday, Congressman Mark Meadows said on Fox News that there is “a growing body of evidence” suggesting that Comey may have made inaccurate statements about FBI and Obama Justice Department coordination over the Clinton email investigation .

"Not only was that false, but we know that over and over again now, we have emails that would suggest that that testimony was false and at best misled the American public, at worst was lying to Congress," he added.

Additionally, President Trump has claimed that Mr. Comey repeatedly “lied under oath.”

On Wednesday, McCabe accused Comey of not telling the truth about media leaks.

“Neither Mr. Comey nor the [Office of the Inspector General] is infallible, and in this case neither of them has it right,” McCabe’s said in a statement through his attorney.

A recent Office of the Inspector General (OIG) report came to the conclusion that Mr. McCabe “lacked candor” about his habit of leaking unauthorized information to the press.

The OIG report found four instances in which McCabe “lacked candor,” three of which occurred under oath. Not only did McCabe lie, he leveraged the unauthorized disclosures to discipline and reprimand his colleagues without disclosing that he was the source of the leaks, according to the Obama-appointed inspector general, Michael Horowitz.

In summary, top legislators and the president are accusing Comey of being a liar, while McCabe’s own former colleagues are also accusing him of the same. The two alleged liars are now accusing one another of lying. In the end, it may turn out that both men misled U.S. officials and the public.

There’s still more to come. The inspector general’s office will soon release a more comprehensive report concerning the actions of the Comey and McCabe-led FBI during the 2016 presidential election.
