Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. –Colossians 2:6-10
That is the passage of Scripture that came over me one day and convinced me to do my first-ever full-fledged Bible study on my show. How remarkable that it came to me before the Kavanaugh mess took over the national political conversation. How remarkable its prophetic wisdom, for we truly are captives of the present age.
How remarkable its calm evidence of amazing grace as the storm rages around it: Be still and know that I AM.
It’s with the benefit of such grace that I tweeted some post-Kavanaugh confirmation observations last weekend as an antidote to the terrible tribalism that has replaced civil debate in our land:
Reminder, adults are capable of accepting multiple facts at once without succumbing to emotionalism, like: Susan Collins remains a progressive RINO who handled herself with dignity yesterday.
Reminder, adults are capable of accepting multiple facts at once without succumbing to emotionalism, like: Lindsey Graham remains an open borders, all the wars progressive, but his sudden burst of late-arriving testosterone is appreciated.
Reminder, adults are capable of accepting multiple facts at once without succumbing to emotionalism, like: Kavanaugh didn't excite the conservative base for reasons that remain, yet the conservative base was right to rally to defend him against an obvious character assassination.
Reminder, adults are capable of accepting multiple facts at once without succumbing to emotionalism, like: McConnell and Team GOP has screwed us repeatedly on policy and the budget, but also stopped the Democrats from stacking the court the past few years.
Adults, that is, who aren’t captive to the progressive spirit of the age and, yes, Team GOP partisan myopia, which includes a lot of us.
It is a near certitude that the Republicans will overestimate their degree of collective responsibility for getting Kavanaugh across the finish line. Which means it is also a near certitude that the party will double down on all of its old idol worship, or begin the fashioning of entirely new and brilliantly stupid additions to the idol pantheon.
So it is then that the Kavanaugh win could ultimately be the most Pyrrhic of victories.
Mitch and Lindsey merely defeated Diane Feinstein and Cory Booker. But they didn’t defeat the progressive mob. No, that mob actually tripled down on its own worldview and literally chased people down in the streets if they weren’t woke enough and attempted to bang down the doors of the Supreme Court itself.
There simply comes a point where the Overton window created by Team GOP over the last few decades will no longer be sufficient to steer such craziness into a catalyst for its own victories. At that point, politics will have no sufficient answers, because an existential war will be unmistakably at hand (and likely already is).
Do the Republicans understand that this is the fork in the road we're approaching, or perhaps have already arrived at? Or did last week's sudden and heretofore unseen burst of courage of conviction from Team GOP come not because they're finally awakened to the woke zombies, but because one of "their guys" in Kavanaugh was the target this time? And as long as it's us out here in flyover country and the candidates we like targeted by the mobocracy, they've got K Street checks to cash?
We will soon find out. Not because we will force the GOP to show us, but because the mob will.
