Michelle Williams' vapid, ghoulish abortion speech gives us another reason to tune Hollywood out

In the year 2020, it's possible to get up in front of a room full of people, promote the "self-interest" of killing children, and get showered in praise as a result. Case in point: The hearty round of applause for actress Michelle Williams' pro-abortion speech at the Golden Globe awards Sunday night.

British comedian Ricky Gervais began the night by urging the attendees to spare the viewing public their political hot takes. "So, if you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech," he said. "You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world."

But of course, Gervais' message went unheeded by Michelle Williams and her pro-abortion award acceptance speech. Somebody had to give a lecture, after all; asking a roomful of entertainers to spare the rest of the public the political lectures at an awards ceremony is like asking the sun to set in the east for a change.

During her remarks, Williams — visibly pregnant with her second child — said, "I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose, to choose when to have my children, and with whom."

She also managed to bring faith and the First Amendment into it for good measure. "I know my choices might look different than yours," Williams said. "But thank God, or whomever you pray to, that we live in a country founded on the principle that I am free to live by my faith and you are free to live by yours," she continued, as if the right to a free conscience necessarily implies the ability to snuff out another human being's right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" before they get to see the light of day.

And then, of course, we get to the application portion of the message. "So, women, 18 to 118, when it is time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest," Williams urged. She noted that women "are the largest voting body in this country" and that they should "make it look more like us," naturally glossing over the reality that a lot of women — including early feminists — don't share her pro-abortion views.

And what an overarching message for the folks at home: Make sure to look out for number one, especially when looking out for number one means safeguarding the ability to take the life of your own flesh and blood at will. It's truly ghoulish for someone who has to be aware of the unique and precious human life growing inside her body to give such a glowing speech in support of the license to willfully destroy other such unique, precious human lives in the name of "self-interest." Likewise, it's truly Hollywood-esque for a roomful of show business types to wildly, thunderously, and emotionally applaud a message about such a self-interested ethos.

But really, who's all that surprised by the message or the reaction, whether in our outside the room? This merely once again reminded people living in the real world of the quality of moral and political insight that so many of our esteemed entertainers have to offer us and why it would be great if more of them would take just take Ricky Gervais' advice.
