Republicans reject conservative Jim Jordan for leadership

House Republicans elected Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., to be the new minority leader in the House Wednesday, granting him the number one leadership spot.

McCarthy defeated conservative challenger Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, by a wide margin in the conference vote.

Republicans also elected Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., to be minority whip, giving him the number two leadership spot in the GOP caucus next year.

What is there to say about the election results? They were largely expected, despite a large push from conservative grassroots organizations to convince House Republicans to elect Jordan to leadership. The fact of the matter is the Republican conference in the House is not conservative, and that's reflected in GOP leadership. So what you can expect from the next two years is Republicans pounding the table about Democratic subpoenas and Democratic spending legislation while effectively doing nothing to stop it.

And it's unclear what, if anything, can change that.
