Vote Alert: Cut Ethanol Subsidies

This amendment sponsored by Rep. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) cut subsidies to the ethanol industry. At the time, the ethanol industry received the triple crown of government protection: mandate to use their product, tariff protections from overseas ethanol, and government subsidies. Ethanol has failed at its goal of reducing foreign dependence on oil and has only served to drive up food prices while decreasing mileage for vehicles. The amendment was approved 283 – 128 on June 16, 2011 and subsequently died in the Senate.
