Vote Alert: Pass Kate’s Law

Vote Alert: Pass Kate’s Law

The tragic, preventable death of Kate Steinle at the hands of an illegal immigrant who had previously been deported five times and was released from detainment by San Francisco’s sanctuary city policies ignited a wave of outrage that became the impetus for Kate’s Law. Named for Steinle, this proposed law would increase penalties for those who attempt to re-enter the United States after deportation.

Under Kate’s Law, “any [non-criminal] alien who has been denied admission, excluded, deported, or removed, or who has departed the United States while an order of exclusion, deportation, or removal is outstanding, and subsequently enters, attempts to enter, crosses the border to, attempts to cross the border to, or is at any time found in the United States” would be subject to up to two years in prison. Criminal aliens would serve longer prison sentences.

The sanctuary city policies that lead to the release of illegal aliens held by authorities have led to an epidemic of preventable crimes. In a 2014 analysis of sanctuary cities, ICE found that 8,145 illegal aliens were released over a nine-month period and 1,867 were subsequently re-arrested a total of 4,298 times on nearly 7,500 criminal charges. That’s 7,500 crimes that would have been prevented if these illegal aliens had remained detained.

The Constitution vests the federal government with broad power over immigration in order to protect our sovereignty as a nation and prevent individual states from endangering the rest of the country with invidious open border policies. It is high time for Congress to assert its authority to ensure criminal illegal aliens detained by police are kept off American streets.

The House voted on and passed this bill on June 29, 2017, in a roll call vote of 257-167.
