Author details why anxiety, depression, and suicide are rising on America's college campuses

"We were teaching really dysfunctional intellectual habits on campus whether we know it or not"

New York Times best-selling author, and President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), Greg Lukianoff, sat down in the studio with Glenn Beck to discuss his book, 'The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure.' Greg described how his personal recovery from depression and anxiety through CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) opened his eyes to what's happening with today's students on college campuses in America.

Greg explained that he was studying "Cognitive distortions, the things that people do distort the world around them" such as labeling, catastrophizing, and overgeneralizing that are at the root of depression and anxiety.

"As I'm studying these things that are effectively making me well ... I was working on college campuses," said Greg. That's when he realized that "every administrator is telling the students, 'By the way, everybody should label, overgeneralize, catastrophize, engage in binary thinking, mind-reading,' and all these things that they tell you not to do because they will make you anxious and depressed."

"We were teaching really dysfunctional intellectual habits on campus whether we know it or not," Greg continued. "Then, seemingly overnight in 2013 - 2014, suddenly the students started demanding that people get dis-invited from campus ... they were demanding micro-aggression policies, trigger warning policies ... a list of things professors should avoid that included anything that touches on racism, sexism, class-ism," he added.
