'They treat public opinion as an obstacle to get around, not as a source of instruction'
Conservative Party Member of European Parliament Daniel Hannan joined Glenn Beck on the radio program to talk about Tuesday's landslide defeat of U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan. British lawmakers rejected May's plan by 230 votes, an outcome that could complicate Brexit, the U.K.'s plan to exit the European Union, which is scheduled to take effect on March 29.
"It appears to us, on this side of the water, that you're kind of going through the same thing we've been going through," Glenn said. "Where the politicians are just not listening to the people and they're going their own way. And Theresa May has paid a heavy price for it."
Hannan agreed, noting that the "political class" has refused to accept the results of the 2016 referendum, in which the U.K. voted to leave the European Union.
"Basically, the politicians and their allies in the political elites are not doing what the country instructed them to," he explained.
"There have been some who've, right from the beginning, just tried to overturn the results or disregard it," Hannan added. "It's not uncommon practice in the EU. Whenever they get a result that they don't like in a referendum, they try to rerun it or disregard it ... they treat public opinion as an obstacle to get around, not as a source of instruction."
