'An incredibly dangerous precedent': Ben Shapiro warns against use of emergency powers to build the wall. Here's why.

'That's not to undermine the idea that there's a serious problem at the border'

On Tuesday's radio program, The Daily Wire's editor-in-chief, Ben Shapiro, joined Glenn Beck to talk about President Donald Trump's effort to fund the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border through declaring a national emergency.

The Democratic-controlled House is slated to vote Tuesday on a resolution to block the president's emergency powers, although Trump has already vowed to veto the measure.

Ben offered an alternative solution to securing our southern border without declaring a national emergency.

"The truth is that the president should use 10 U.S.C., 284, a law that allows the Secretary of Defense to declare certain areas of the border [as] drug corridors, and then the president can simply build additional fencing there," he explained. "That doesn't require it be in the case of a national emergency."

Ben noted that funding is already available through the Defense Department to secure such "drug corridors," which also tend to be where people come across the border illegally.

"Obviously, [Trump] can't declare the entire border a drug corridor, but he can certainly declare the most high-trafficked areas of the border drug corridors," he added. "The reason that I prefer that approach is because, once you have presidents starting to declare national emergencies when they can't get something through Congress, that's an incredibly dangerous precedent."

Glenn suggested the Democrats might actually want President Trump to use his emergency powers because it would give them the "green light" to "become a dictator." He pointed out that many on the left are already calling climate change a national emergency and would likely use President Trump's precedent to force the calamitous Green New Deal on Americans as soon as the next Democratic president is in office.

"There's no question here that, in a colloquial sense, we have a real emergency at the border. But that emergency has been there for 35 years. It's not as though things have radically ramped up in recent years," Ben said. "That's not to undermine the idea that there's a serious problem at the border."
