KXAS-TV reported that a 27-year-old man who is well-known by the Fort Worth Police Department had not been taking his medication and was having thoughts of hurting people. The man's father called the police and told the dispatcher that his son could carry out a mass killing and that police needed to be alerted.

An off-duty officer who had interacted with the man received a voicemail about the father's call at around lunchtime on Sept. 3 and contacted the police right away. Officers responded immediately and canvassed the general areas given by the father of his son's whereabouts.

Police found the man disoriented and in the throes of a mental health crisis. According to police, the man had been to multiple businesses looking to buy a gun. The man was unable to pass a background check and was turned away by each store he visited and had resorted to looking to buy a gun off of the street.

"What does that tell you? It should tell you that if these guys can't buy a gun legally, they will try to do it illegally. They are going to try and own a gun regardless," Pat said.

The man told police when they arrived that he was "not living in reality" and that he had "died and was living in hell," the station reported. One police officer reported that the man believed the officer was trying to kill him right there with his mind.

"How do we know he wasn't trying to kill him with his mind," Pat joked.

When police asked the man why he was trying to buy a gun, the man was blunt.

"To kill people," the man said, the station reported.

Pat concluded that the system worked in the way it should have.

  • The man's father reached out to authorities for help.
  • The dispatcher and police officers took the call seriously.
  • The background check system prevented businesses from selling the man a gun.
  • A possible massacre was averted.
