Dancing With the Stars' Champ Arrested for DUI, Says He Was Not 'Impaired

Hines Ward, Super Bowl most valuable player and "Dancing With the Stars" champion, said he was not under the influence of alcohol despite his arrest on a drunk driving charge near Atlanta Saturday.

TMZ was among the first to report Ward's arrest, saying he failed a field sobriety test and refused a breathalyzer after drifting in his lane and hitting a curb. He was released on bond.

In a statement through his manager, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver denied being impaired by alcohol and apologized to his fans:

On July 9th Hines Ward was stopped by Dekalb Co. police for suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence. He cooperated fully with the police and truthfully answered all of their questions. We are currently in the process of ascertaining all the facts.

From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was NOT impaired by alcohol while driving. However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction.
