It's inhumane... unless it's in Manhattan and nets $800/month in rent
August 08, 2011
The story of the 78-square-foot apartment in Manhattan got me thinking about living conditions and how they vary from place to place. Compare, for instance, the tiny "efficient" New York apartment...
...with an average cell in s a U.S. federal supermax prison:

The trade-offs are interesting: the chic Manhattanite gets a sizable window and access to sharp objects, but a convicted dangerous felon gets his own toilet, sink and shower. One of them pays $800 out of his own pocket every month in rent; the other gets free room & board courtesy of the taxpayers.
Lousy housing is truly in the eyes of the tenant, I suppose.
