Paul Ryan on whether Obama responsible for GM plant closing: 'That's not what I was saying

Nearly a week later, Paul Ryan is still defending his convention speech from critics that say it was riddled with inaccuracies. The part of Ryan's speech that has attracted most attention from opponents and fact-checkers is when he suggested President Obama should be held accountable for a GM plant that closed in Wisconsin at the start of his term. The decision to close the plant was made before Obama assumed the presidency.

“What they are trying to suggest is I said Barack Obama was responsible for a plant shutdown in Janesville,” Ryan said on NBC's Today. “That is not what I was saying. Read the speech. What I was saying is the president ought to be held to account for his broken promises. After our plant was shut down, he said would lead an effort to retool plants like the Janesville plant to get people back to work.”
