Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution a 25-year-old man was arrested. WSB-TV reported the suspect was described as a white male dressed all in black and carrying an AK-47. He reportedly surrendered peacefully.
WSB reported a woman in the office at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur called the newsroom to report a shooter in the school, and said the gunman had asked her to call WSB and the police. Shots were heard over the phone, WSB reported.
Students were evacuated and escorted onto the field, and school buses were transporting them to a nearby Wal-Mart for parents to pick them up.
