Watch Trey Gowdy’s Amazing Response to Dem Colleague Who Says Members of Congress Are 'Underpaid\
April 04, 2014
"Mr. Moran may feel that way... he is a majority of one."
It is “laughable” to think members of U.S. Congress are “underpaid” at a yearly salary of $174,000, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) told Greta Van Susteren on Friday.
Jim Moran, a Democratic congressman from Virginia, has been mocked incessantly after he claimed recently that some lawmakers can’t live “decently” on their income and suggested members of Congress deserve more money.
“I would be embarrassed to say that given our job performance and our salary, that we are anything over than grossly overcompensated.” Gowdy said.
There are “plenty of Democrats” who feel the same way, he continued, adding that he doesn’t know “any colleagues on either side of the aisle… who would tell anyone that they deserve a pay raise.”
“Mr. Moran may feel that way, but I’ve talked to plenty of Democrats and Republicans, today, after he said what he said, and he is a majority of one if he believes that,” Gowdy said.
Further, the Republican argued that “public service” means you “give something up” and get “compensated in other ways.”
