What would those old empires look like today? Map geeks have the answers.

Some people reminisce about old bands getting back together.

Users of the "Map Porn" subreddit, on the other hand, have been spending this week reminiscing about old historical empires getting back together.

The idea is simple: What would an historic empire look like if it existed today?

Users have covered the historical gamut, from the Roman Empire...

One user even mocked up the Confederate States of America circa 2014, which the user calculated would have more than 100 million residents and an economy to rival the U.S., China and Japan.

It's an interesting exercise for map lovers, though given the historical sins of some of the nations — from the Mongols' butchery of tens of millions of people to the Confederacy's slave state — the world might be grateful that these old empires aren't getting back together anytime soon.
