20-Year-Old Man Fleeing Police May Never Live Down the Way He Was Captured
August 23, 2014
"I got into a football stance..."
Becky Powell was in a moving car when she saw a man running from police officers in Richland, Washington.
Powell, 40, told her husband to speed ahead of the fleeing man — who turned out to be half her age.
"I told my husband (the cop) is never going to catch him," Powell, a bartender, told the Tri-City Herald.
Then — while the car was still moving, the Herald noted — she got out to confront him.
"I got into a football stance and said, 'You're going to stay here,' " Powell told the Herald. "He stiff-armed me and I just wrapped him up and threw him on the ground."
Not only that — when she tackled the man, Powell grabbed his shorts and underwear, exposing his rear end as they fell, the paper added.
She got help pinning the man down...and then the big payoff: "I whispered in his ear, 'How does it feel to be taken down by a mother of five and a grandmother of three?'" Powell told the Herald.
She even got a high-five from an officer after her citizen's arrest Wednesday, the Herald noted.
Richland police Capt. Mike Cobb said police appreciated Powell's actions but warned people not to get involved in police matters.
The 20-year-old man Powell tackled, Joseph Lewis Fry, told police he ran because he had an outstanding warrant, Cobb told the Herald, adding that he was jailed on suspicion of obstructing a police officer.
