Major Deceptive Edit Revealed in Video Allegedly Showing Actor Kirk Cameron Claiming 'God Hates F*gs

"It gives me great pleasure to show the world what an arrogant douchebag Kirk Cameron is."

Entertainment outlet TMZ has come to Kirk Cameron's defense, debunking the contents of a video that was intentionally edited to misrepresent past statements by the "Growing Pains" actor about his views on homosexuality and the Christian faith.

Taking and editing footage that was shot 15-20 years ago, TMZ reported that "a company called Deeper Understanding grossly misrepresented what Cameron said," making it look as though the actor proclaimed that "God hates f**s."

The big problem, though, is that Cameron was actually decrying anyone who would go around saying such things, dismissing the comment as unloving and wrong-headed.

"And then Christians make an error either on the right or on the left. They'll either try to attack the branch viciously and an extreme example of that would be to say, you know, 'God hates gay people. God hates fags and you're going to hell so you better repent,'" he said in the unedited clip. "And that's a terrible way to talk to somebody."

But the edited version of this statement — which has gone viral in recent days — totally reframes what Cameron said to make it look as though he uttered hateful sentiment:

According to TMZ, a representative for Deeper Understanding admitted that the editing was inaccurate, but defended it.

The Huffington Post recently gave a bit more background on the group, explaining that it is comprised of Robert Hill and Danny Haloossim who "regularly create captivating and often hilarious videos using found footage."

Haloossim told the outlet in an email that the clip was tweaked for the blog Everything Is Terrible, a comedy site that features satirical video edits.

"We thought it would get a few laughs, and that would be the end of it. We weren't expecting it to be shared around the Internet as much as it has," he said. "But, it gives me great pleasure to show the world what an arrogant douchebag Kirk Cameron is."

Haloossim added, "Yes, we did cherry-pick some of the more outrageous quotes and some things are presented out of context, but if you watch the entire, unedited video, the message of intolerance and hate is exactly the same."
