Benjamin Netanyahu: The American People See 'Eye to Eye With Us' on Iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that most Americans agree with his assessment of the Iranian threat.

“I must say that the overwhelming majority of the American public sees eye to eye with us on the danger from Iran,” Netanyahu said in remarks to Israeli foreign ministry workers. “It is important to reach out to American public opinion with the fact that Iran is the enemy of the U.S., it declares this openly, and Israel is the ally of the U.S. This understanding has important ramifications for our future security."

Netanyahu’s remarks came one day after retiring U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) announced that she would support the nuclear deal, providing the crucial 34th vote for President Barack Obama to sustain a veto against any effort by Congress to squash the agreement.

Despite weeks of efforts by the White House and State Department to sell the deal, even creating a Twitter account to promote the agreement, the public still does not appear to be enthusiastically embracing the deal.

Netanyahu's assessment tracks with a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday that said 55 percent of U.S. voters oppose the nuclear agreement with Iran, more than twice the 25 percent who said they support it.

Despite the deep disagreements over the nuclear deal between the two governments, Netanyahu emphasized the high regard in which he holds Israel's relationship with the U.S.

He told the diplomats of the importance in “maintaining our close ties with the traditional countries, especially the U.S., even in the face of differences of opinion.”
