Flashback: Bush booed, mocked by 'Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye' song at '09 Obama inaugural
January 20, 2017
Many of you remember watching President Barack Obama getting sworn into office for the first time exactly eight years ago — Jan. 20, 2009.
While the throng that greeted Obama was ecstatic that afternoon, giddy over the "hope and change" he promised to America, many in the crowd weren't too happy about seeing the image of outgoing President George W. Bush.
In fact, a number of videos captured audience members loudly booing Bush at the very sight of him.
But perhaps an even more telling reaction were the numerous, spontaneous voices that rose up in the audience and mocked the Republican with a familiar chorus: "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!"
While you've more than likely heard the tune a few times, you might not know it began life as a throwaway B-side recorded in late 1969 by the group Steam. While the outfit didn't go on to music immortality, their big hit sure did:
Is it possible that in the audience Friday seeing off Obama will reprise the song as Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office?
Nah.
