Woman responsible for anti-Muslim rant says video was taken out of context

A video showing a white woman railing against a Muslim woman in line at a Reston, Va., Trader Joe's grocery store went viral on Monday, and after her remarks were filmed, the unnamed woman spoke to FOX 5 DC, and told them that her rant was taken out of context.

In the video, originally shared to Facebook by comedian Jeremy McLellan, the woman can be heard telling the Muslim woman, “I wish they didn’t let you in this country," and gleefully noted that there's no longer a "Muslim" in office, referencing reports that former President Barack Obama was a Muslim.

The unnamed woman told FOX 5 that her remarks were taken out of context, and that she feels the taping was unfair as it didn't report what led her to make the statements against the Muslim woman in the grocery store. The woman reported that the Muslim woman "ambushed" her and made "strong statements" about the United States, claiming that it was full of murderers and rapists.

It was reported that the Muslim woman—a friend of comedian McLellan's—began filming the woman when she began mocking her traditional Muslim dress and broached the topic of female genital mutilation.

McLellan told FOX 5 that he felt compelled to share the video because of his perception of deteriorating conditions between Americans and Muslim-Americans.

"I wanted people to know that it has happened," McLellan said. "I have a lot of Muslim friends, and they experience these types of things quite often. And whenever they tell people, people don't believe it or they come up with excuses, or they come up with some sort of scenario where they are exaggerating it—like this is not a really big problem that is going on."

In McLellan's original Facebook post, he wrote, "A friend of mine (who wishes to remain anonymous) just sent this to me. I've confirmed that it's real. This happened today at the Trader Joe's in Reston, VA. This woman was in a hurry so my friend (who is a Muslim woman) offered to let her go in front of her in line. That's when she started talking bad about a different Muslim woman in the store (who was wearing niqab) and asking my friend why she didn't cover as well. My friend replied it was a choice and the woman didn't believe her and started talking about FGM and telling her "I wish they didn't let you in the country." That's when my friend started filming.

Enjoy. Let's make this lady famous."

The unnamed woman featured in the video told FOX 5 in a Tuesday interview that she's seeking legal representation and has been receiving death threats since the video went viral.
