Kim Kardashian pens letter calling for more gun control: ‘All of my security team is armed, but...\

Despite admitting that her entire security team is armed, reality television personality Kim Kardashian penned a letter last week calling for stricter gun control.

Kardashian wrote the letter in honor of National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 2.

In the letter, Kardashian appealed to emotions by citing the anniversaries of America’s most tragic incidents perpetrated by people with guns, including Sandy Hook in 2012, Virginia Tech in 2007, Columbine in 1999 and Orlando last year.

Kardashian also attacked President Donald Trump for revoking new gun regulations enacted by former President Barack Obama last year. The regulations required the Social Security Administration to report to the FBI the names of people who have been deemed “mentally incapable” of managing their finances, according to NPR, and affected nearly 75,000 Americans.

“In almost 20 years, our country has made very little progress in enacting laws that would help protect innocent Americans from people who should not have access to firearms,” Kardashian wrote. “This is crazy!"

Noting that she works with Everytown, an organization diametrically opposed to the National Rifle Association, Kardashian highlighted the “disconnect” between the laws “the country needs to protect our people” and the laws that Congress actually introduces and approves.

Then Kardashian made a claim that would make every first-year law student’s head spin. She claimed there are no restrictions placed on the Second Amendment, making it different than the First Amendment. This, however, is not true.

In fact, recent Supreme Court landmark cases "Heller v. D.C.” and "McDonald v. Chicago” agreed that states and municipalities are lawfully able to place “reasonable restrictions” on the Second Amendment. Some examples include: prohibiting “high capacity” magazines, banning hollow-point ammunition or even prohibiting concealed carry.

What is not lawful, the court upheld, is unilaterally banning firearms, including handguns.

“Is it more important to protect the Second Amendment than to protect our own children?” Kardashian asked.

Kardashian, who is married to rapper Kanye West, emphasized that she is “not against guns” and “not against people owning guns,” citing being robbed last year in a high-profile heist in Paris. And despite the fact that her security team is strapped, Kardashian claimed that they, too, advocate for increased gun control.

Kardashian went on to explained what better gun control looks like to her: “[I] believe that we should restrict access to firearms for people with mental illness, anyone previously convicted of a misdemeanor, those who have been subject to a temporary restraining order and those at higher risk of committing gun violence."

In most jurisdictions, misdemeanors  include petty crimes likes trespassing, public intoxication and even driving without a license.
