Nunes denies Republicans are tying FISA memo to Mueller - and blames the media

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) told Bret Baier that it was actually Democrats who were trying to tie the FISA memo to Robert Mueller's Russian investigation.

Here's what he said:

Bret Baier asked Nunes about a specific meeting he had with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

"I've had several meetings with Mr. Rosenstein," Nunes responded, "and I like him personally. I think that he can fix the problems over at DOJ, and we're willing to work with him."

"So you don't think he should be fired from his job?" Baier asked.

"Well look that's not my decision," Nunes replied. "All I can say is that Mr. Rosenstein has a long career, but look he's never really been in Washington D.C..."

"You know there are some members who are using this to question the Mueller investigation?" Baier pressed on. "Are you separating the two?"

"Well, I think what's happening is I think the mainstream media and the Democrats are tying this to the Mueller investigation because they're trying to perpetuate this nonsense of obstruction of justice," Nunes said, "because they've left the Russia collusion issue."

"They know there was no collusion," he continued. "And you know I've been saying this for a year now, that there is no evidence of collusion."

Nunes' accusations come at about the 11:40 minute mark:

Allies of the president have been arguing that the contents and accusations of the FISA memo undermine the justification of the Mueller investigation, and some have even called for his firing on that basis.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who has been one of the more vociferous promoters of the memo, said Thursday that it proves Mueller's investigation was based on a "false, rotten premise."

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), one of the authors of the memo, denied Friday that the memo undermined Mueller in any way.
