The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the state of California over their "sanctuary city" policies that deterred the enforcement of federal immigration law.

Here's what they're suing over

The DOJ sought an injunction against three laws passed in California in the last year.

One law mandates that state employees demand a warrant or a subpoena from immigration officials before providing them with assistance.

Another law limits what information can be shared with ICE officials, and a third gives state officials power to monitor Homeland Security detention centers for illegal immigrants.

The federal government argues that the laws are in violation of the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution that says federal laws have priority over conflicting state and local laws.

Sad political stunts

Jerry Brown, the governor of California, fired back from his social media account Tuesday.

“At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America," he tweeted.

"Jeff, these political stunts may be the norm in Washington, but they don’t work here. SAD!!!” he added.

“We’ve seen this B-rated movie before," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. "So we’re not totally surprised."

President Trump has offered to back a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal alien "dreamers" in exchange for Democrat support for billions in funding for his border wall. So far, the Democrats have refused the deal.
