Twitter CEO sparks controversy by praising article suggesting Dems start 'civil war

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sparked controversy this week by praising a Medium article that claims there is no “bipartisan way forward” and the U.S. has two conflicting worldviews "that must be resolved in short order.”

Dorsey tweeted the article on his personal account, adding that he believes it’s a “great read.”

His tweet comes at a time when Twitter stands accused of banning conservative accounts deemed to be in violation of the social media site’s terms of service.

Twitter has also been accused of “shadowbanning,” a practice that essentially makes a user’s posts invisible to others. That allows the site to decide what gets seen and what doesn't.

What did the article say?

In the Medium article titled, “The Great Lesson of California in America’s New Civil War," author and media consultant Peter Leyden and political commentator Ruy Teixeira wrote, in part:

In the early 2000s, California faced a similar situation to the one America faces today. Its state politics were severely polarized, and state government was largely paralyzed. The Republican Party was trapped in the brain-dead orthodoxies of an ideology stuck in the past. The party was controlled by zealous activists and corrupt special interests who refused to face up to the reality of the new century. It was a party that refused to work with the Democrats in good faith or compromise in any way.

The solution for the people of California was to reconfigure the political landscape and shift a supermajority of citizens — and by extension their elected officials — under the Democratic Party’s big tent.

The article went on to state that “California today provides a model for America as a whole.”

“Essentially, the authors called for a complete marginalization of the Republican Party and its voters since they only care ‘about rule by and for billionaires at the expense of working people’ and not ‘average citizens,’ ” wrote Daily Caller media reporter Joe Simonson.

Dorsey later took issue with a Tweet by Daily Caller reporter Peter Hasson, who said Dorsey “loves” the article.

How has Twitter silenced conservatives?

Twitter’s alleged practice of silencing conservative views was on display in March when conservative writer Devin Sena tweeted a picture of a healthy unborn baby with the caption: “This is a human,” and the hashtag “TriggerALiberalIn4Words.”

Twitter decided the post to be “sensitive material” and posted a warning over it. The sensitive material warnings require users to click on a Tweet in order to see its content.

Twitter also sent an email to Sena warning that any “future tweets could be permanently suppressed in a similar manner if he didn’t self-censor in the future,” the Daily Caller reported.
