French president Emmanuel Macron says he respects President Trump because they're both 'mavericks

French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday his relationship with President Donald Trump is special, partly because they are both "mavericks."

Macron’s comments came during an interview on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace. Macron will be in Washington this week for a state visit with the Trump administration.

What did he say?

"We have this very special relationship because the both of us are probably the mavericks of the system," Macron told Wallace.

"I think President Trump's election was unexpected in your country, and probably my election was unexpected in my country. We are not part of the classical political system," he added.

"I think we are very much aligned on some of the very critical issues of the world, especially countering terrorism and fighting [the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria]," Macron said. "I think we have a very strong, personal relation based on the different meetings we had, especially such as your president gave to my country for Bastille Day in 2017."

Have various scandals discredited Trump?

Wallace asked Macron if he believes various scandals and investigations will hurt Trump’s credibility on the international scene.

“To me, there is no impact,” Macron said.

He added: "Here, in this office, I’m not the one to judge and in certain way, to explain to your people what should be your president."

Macron pointed out that both France and the U.S. have a long history of working together and both agree on maintaining freedom and peace.

“That’s why even when we have some disagreements on climate and some issues, I think the most important thing is just to remind that we are at the service of our people…and this service is to work for the very long-term history," he explained.

Macron also said he feels confident that Trump will serve a full term as president.

“I never wonder that. I mean, I work with him. I work with him because both of us are very much at the service of our country on both sides," Macron said.
