Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) made a dubious claim about the number of women that support the impeachment of President Trump Monday while appearing on MSNBC.

Here’s what she said

Waters was discussing whether it was a good strategy for Democrats to endorse impeaching the president during a guest appearance on Chris Hayes’ MSNBC show.

“You don’t agree both tactically and also substantively? I guess my point is, I know you substantively feel he’s committed impeachable offenses,” Hayes asked. “Are you not persuaded by the idea that it would be a tactical mistake politically?”

“No I’m not persuaded by that idea, you know why?” Waters responded. “Because I tell you, everywhere I go people are talking about, why can’t you all get rid of him? Why don’t they impeach him? What’s wrong with the other members of Congress, why don’t they stand up with you?”

“This man is dishonorable, he lies all the time,” she added. “He’s a con man. They say all of these things and I’m not just talking about my district, whether I’m on the airplane, I’m walking down the street in New York, wherever I am.”

“I’m hearing it and I’m told that seventy percent of women who have been polled say that they want him impeached,” she claimed. Hayes ended the segment without commenting on, or correcting, her statement.

How many women actually want Trump impeached?

In a recent Marist poll, Americans were asked if they would vote for or against a candidate for Congress if they want to move to impeach Trump. Only 49 percent of women said they would vote for the pro-impeachment candidate, and 40 percent said they would definitely vote against the pro-impeachment candidate. That falls far short of Waters’ contention that 70 percent of women support impeaching Trump.

The poll further found that 61 percent of women disapprove of Trump’s performance, while 31 percent approve, and 9 percent are unsure.

Waters has been a vocal opponent of Trump, and has advocated for his impeachment since the very beginning of his first term.
