Peter Fonda issues lengthy apology after calling for Barron Trump to be put in cage with pedophiles

Award-winning actor Peter Fonda has acknowledged that he went way too far with comments he made Wednesday targeting President Donald Trump's youngest son, Barron.

Fonda went on a profane rant against the Trumps on Wednesday and said that Barron should be removed from his family and placed in a cage — with pedophiles.

Fonda, 78, made the remark while pointing to the migrant children crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

On Twitter, Fonda wrote, “We should rip Barron Trump from his mother’s arms and put him in a cage with pedophiles and see if mother will stand up against the giant a**hole she is married to. 90 million people in the streets on the same weekend in the country. F***.”

In their responses to Fonda's foul tweet, many Twitter users tagged the Secret Service’s official Twitter account in an apparent attempt to report him.

Stephanie Grisham, a spokesperson for Melania Trump issued a statement condemning Fonda's remarks later on Wednesday.

Grisham told the Daily Caller, “The tweet is sick and irresponsible and USSS has been notified.”

In a statement to Fox News, Fonda backpedaled on his comments and called them inappropriate.

"I tweeted something highly inappropriate and vulgar about the president and his family in response to the devastating images I was seeing on television," Fonda said. "Like many Americans, I am very impassioned and distraught over the situation with children separated from their families at the border, but I went way too far."

He added, "It was wrong and I should not have done it. I immediately regretted it and sincerely apologize to the family for what I said and any hurt my words have caused."

Fonda canceled a planned appearance at a media junket for his latest film "Boundaries" — which is set to release Friday — as a result of the controversy.

What did Sony Pictures say?

Sony Pictures, which is distributing "Boundaries," also condemned Fonda's remarks in a statement obtained by TheWrap. But the company noted that they would not be pulling the movie from release despite the inflammatory comments.

“Peter Fonda’s comments are abhorrent, reckless and dangerous, and we condemn them completely,” Sony said. “It is important to note that Mr. Fonda plays a very minor role in the film. To pull or alter this film at this point would unfairly penalize the filmmaker Shana Feste’s accomplishment, the many actors, crew members and other creative talent that worked hard on the project.”
