New Zealand man travels to Virginia to find teen he met online. Mom stops him with a bullet.

A Virginia mom took matters into her own hands when she shot the man who flew across the world to meet her teenage daughter, WTVR-TV reported.

The 25-year-old New Zealand man was shot when he attempted to break into the Goochland County home of a girl he'd met on the popular gaming app, Discord, according to the Goochland County Sheriff's Department.

The mother, who has not been identified, was home with her two teenage daughters when the incident occurred.

"This was not random. This was not spontaneous," Sheriff Jim Agnew said during a news conference. "This was something very planned."

The 14-year-old girl's mother shot Troy Skinner after she repeatedly warned him she was armed, WTVR reported.

The teen had tried to end communication with Skinner a few months before he made his trek to the U.S., but he wouldn't give up, the station said.

“The younger daughter attempted to stop communications with him. [But] he was opening other accounts in an attempt to keep communications open and she did not cooperate with him,” Agnew said.

What happened?

On Wednesday, Skinner flew from New Zealand to Australia and on to Los Angeles, WTVR reported. He flew from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., where he bought a bus ticket to Richmond, Virginia, Thursday.

On Friday at about 4:30 p.m., the mother was home with her two daughters when they heard someone trying to break into their basement door.

A man, dressed in a black hoodie, yelled at the mother, telling her that he had just hitchhiked 30 miles and needed help.

The woman called her husband who instructed her to grab a gun, WTVR reported.

She warned Skinner that she was armed and had called the police. But he wasn't deterred.

After unsuccessful attempts to break through the basement door, the man went to another entrance where he threw a landscape stone and broke the glass on the door.

When Skinner reached through the door to open it, the mom fired two shots from her .22 caliber handgun at the man, the station reported.

Was he hurt?

The woman struck him with at least one bullet in the neck, the outlet said.

Skinner ran from the scene and collapsed in the next-door neighbor's yard.

Police found a pocketknife, duct tape, and pepper spray in his pockets, according to WTVR.

First responders treated the man at the scene before transporting him to a VCU Medical Center in Richmond, according to the sheriff's department. Skinner remains hospitalized, the station said.

Have charges been filed against Skinner?

Charges are still pending at this time, the sheriff said, according to WTVR.

"He is not the victim," Agnew said. "That lady and her family are the victims."

Authorities are expected to charge Skinner with entering a dwelling with intent to commit rape, murder, robbery or arson, WTVR reported.

Agnew said Skinner had planned on returning to New Zealand June 30.
