VIDEO: 'Why do we celebrate the Fourth of July?' Most folks on beach didn't listen in history class.

Beach frolickers in Santa Monica, California, had their fun interrupted by PragerU's Will Witt, who got them on camera to ask them a couple of questions related to the upcoming July 4 holiday.

Queries such as, you know, "Why do we celebrate the Fourth of July?"

While some correctly replied that the holiday marked the birth of American independence, others clearly weren't listening during history class:

  • "Uhh...I don’t really know."
  • "Umm."
  • "I forgot."

Witt also offered another question related to July 4: "What is the significance of 1776?"

Again, too many regrettable answers:

  • "Is that when Columbus sailed the ocean blue?"
  • "I don't know."
  • "I don’t even know what that is."
  • "I'm not a history person."

One participant seemed at least to know the year 1776 has something to do with America and war, but she didn't go back in time far enough: "Oh, it's the Civil War — or the end of it."

Then she took another big swing and a miss: "Or the End of slavery."

Witt tried someone else — but perhaps he should've just gone home: "'1776 Columbus sailed the ocean blue,'" another beach lover answered. "That's why they say it — 'cause it rhymes."

Happy 4th, everyone.
