Transgender Democratic candidate makes history in state's gubernatorial primary

Christine Hallquist made history as the first transgender candidate for a state's governorship after winning the Democratic primary in Vermont on Tuesday.

'I struggled my whole life with gender issues'

Hallquist was born a man, but "transitioned" to a woman three years ago.

"I am not apologetic for who I am," Hallquist said in an interview with Politico. "I am a proud and out transgender woman.

"When you struggle your whole life with this β€” you know I struggled my whole life with gender issues and I transitioned on December 2, 2015 β€” my goal was to be honest with my children," Hallquist added.

In the same interview, Hallquist admits that she voted for Republican Phil Scott for governor in 2016, but said that her policies are "pretty darn progressive." Phil Scott is the current governor of Vermont, and she will face him in the November general election.

LGBTQ advocates hailed the nomination as a victory for their progressive political agenda. The anti-Trump organization, Woman's March, said that it was a victory for women as well.

"Women keep shattering glass ceilings left and right," they tweeted.

"Congratulations to Christine Hallquist, the first trans woman to win a major party’s nomination for Governor!"

If Hallquist defeats the incumbent Scott in November, she will become the first transgender governor in U.S. history.
