Leftist NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo says America 'was never that great' — then walks it back. Bigly.
August 15, 2018
Far-left New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday declared that America "was never that great" — and then later in the day walked it all back.
Speaking at an event for women and girls in the state, the Democrat said, "We're not going to make America great again. It was never that great."
Cuomo's dig at President Donald Trump's famous campaign slogan was met with a smattering of hoots and hollers from the crowd.
What else did he say?
"We have not reached greatness," he continued. "We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged. We will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone. And every woman's full potential is realized and unleashed, and every woman is making her full contribution."
Later Wednesday, Cuomo struck a decidedly less strident tone.
"Governor Cuomo disagrees with the president," his office said in a statement clarifying his remarks. "The governor believes America is great and that her full greatness will be fully realized when every man, woman, and child has full equality. America has not yet reached its maximum potential."
What else has Cuomo been up to?
Cuomo — who's facing down progressive gubernatorial candidate and former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon this fall — has been busy of late:
- Amid his battle with the National Rifle Association, Cuomo called the organization an "extremist group" that's "caused carnage."
- Cuomo flipped a news event upside down late last month by questioning a reporter about his parent company’s “fraud."
- Also in July he issued conditional pardons to dozens of convicted sexual predators, allowing them the right to vote.
- Cuomo also threatened to “sue” if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade — the landmark decision that legalized abortion across America 45 years ago. How or who he'd sue was unclear.
