Mexico takes action against the migrant caravan from Honduras after Trump issues his demand

President Donald Trump issued a surprising message of thanks to Mexico over its efforts to stop the migrant caravan heading from Honduras toward the U.S. border.

'Thank you Mexico'

President Trump tweeted his thanks to Mexico, a country he has criticized vehemently over illegal immigration, and posted a video of its efforts against the migrant caravan.

"Thank you Mexico, we look forward to working with you!" he tweeted.

In the video he posted, Mexican riot police load up a plane headed to the border between Mexico and Guatemala ahead of the caravan expected to arrive soon.

"Two federal police-filled planes w/anti-riot gear landed near the Mexico/Guatemala border this morn," reported Buzzfeed journalist Karla Zabs. The video was obtained from the Policia Federal de Mexico.

The president has been adamant in his statements against the caravan, which set out for the U.S. border with 1,000 migrants on Saturday. Some reports say it has swelled to 4,000 on its way through Guatemala and toward Mexico.

Trump threatened to cut aid to Honduras, which appeared to precipitate the detention and deportation of the leader and organizer of the caravan in Guatemala.

On Thursday he tweeted a demand from Mexico to stop the "onslaught" of migrants.

"In addition to stopping all payments to these countries," he tweeted, "which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!.."
