101-year-old who's believed to be the oldest working man in Texas shares his secret to life

Chester Hollingsworth, who's believed to be the oldest working man in Texas, celebrated another milestone birthday Thursday: He turned 101.

“Today is my birthday. October the 18th, 1917,” Hollingsworth told KTVT-TV at his birthday party in Dallas.

The World War II veteran and Dallas entrepreneur who still goes to work two days a week was honored by co-workers at S&H Distributing on his big day.

Hollingsworth has tried retiring twice, but it's just not for him.

“I just like to be with people. I don’t mind working,” he said.

What's his story?

The Texas-born centenarian was raised on a cotton farm in Greenville, about 60 miles northeast of Dallas.

“We had a Model T Ford, and it was a terrible way to get around,” he told KTVT.

The day after Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941, he enlisted in the Navy.

“About a month later, I got a notice in the mail with a train ticket to go to San Diego, California,” Hollingsworth told KTVT.

He met his wife, Catherine, at a USO dance in 1942, he told the Dallas Morning News in an interview for his 100th birthday. They were married 68 years before she died in 2011. He said he thinks about her daily.

Nowadays, Hollingsworth lives in his daughter's guesthouse in Colleyville, not far from Dallas, and he has a personal driver, according to the Morning News. He surrendered his driver's license last year.

He said he enjoys his routines, which include picking up a chocolate glazed doughnut and chocolate milk at Krispy Kreme on his way into the office.

What's his secret to a long life?

Hollingsworth, who's Mormon, doesn't drink alcohol but when asked his secret to life, he attributed it to a popular beverage among Texans.

“Dr Pepper,” he answered, adding that he drinks two each day.

He also admitted that loving what you do is also key to a long, happy life.

“If you can get a job, where you love your job and love to go to work that’s what you want,” he said.
