September job growth and unemployment rates offer good news for the Trump administration

The latest jobs and unemployment report showed another month of good news for the Trump administration.

Florida and Texas led the nation in the number of nonfarm jobs added from September 2017 to September 2018, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The two states also added the largest number of jobs to their states in any September year over year period on record.

Overall, the national unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent, down 0.2 percent from August. The national year-over-year unemployment rate fell by 0.5 percent.

What are the details?

Thirty-seven states had increases in nonfarm payroll employment in September over the same period in 2017.

"The largest job gains occurred in Florida (+407,300), Texas (+406,400), and California (+339,600). The largest percentage gain occurred in Florida (+4.8 percent), followed by Utah (+3.6 percent) and Texas (+3.3 percent)," according to the release.

Florida's unemployment rate was 3.5 percent. In Texas, it was 3.8 percent, and in California, it was 4.1 percent.

Three states had over-the-month decreases in nonfarm payroll employment in September. The largest was South Carolina (-0.7), followed by Kansas and North Carolina at (-0.5 each), according to the report.

Nine states showed lower unemployment rates, while 37 states remained stable, the report showed.

In four states, the unemployment rate was higher over the previous month.

Colorado and Wyoming each saw a 0.2 percentage-point increase in unemployment in September over August. And Maine and North Dakota were up 0.1 percentage point over the prior month.

New Mexico had the greatest decline in year-over-year unemployment rates with a decrease of 1.4 percentage points. It fell from 6 percent in September 2017 to 4.6 percent in September 2018.

The lowest unemployment rate in September was Hawaii at 2.2 percent.

The highest rate of unemployment was Alaska at 6.5 percent, which was down from 7.2 percent a month earlier.

Similarly, Pennsylvania showed its largest increase in job gains in 18 years for the same year-over-year period.
