Thousands of caravan migrants are arriving to a Mexico City stadium - here's what it looks like

An NBC News reporter is documenting thousands of migrants arriving in Mexico City and heading to a stadium where they are receiving aid from the Mexican government and NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations).

Here's what it looks like

"A report from Mexico City’s Palillo Stadium where thousands of migrants from the caravan have arrived and thousands more are expected," tweeted Annie Rose Ramos, "tired doesn’t even begin to describe it."

The migrants reportedly left Honduras with 1,000 members, but has swelled in size to as many 12,000, and now includes three other caravans. Mexico has offered them refugee status, including work permits, health care, and other aid, in return for their promise to settle in southern Mexico and abandon their trek.

The migrants refused.

"Three massive tents have been set up by Mexican authorities for people to sleep in like 4yo Ian - the tents are now full though, and many more people are expected in the coming hours," Ramos tweeted.

"People are now pouring out of the tents and sleeping on the open air bleachers which are nearly full as well...and people continue to arrive - most from Honduras who say they’ve been traveling for about a month now," she explained.

The caravans have become a large political issue ahead of the midterm elections on Tuesday. Some have alleged that they have been organized in order to bolster support for Democrats in the elections, while others refuse the idea and point out that they are likely helping Republicans instead.

'Mostly young men and boys...'

"Another group arrives - this time mostly young men and boys, almost traveling by themselves...the stadium has enough to feed 4,000 at the moment and they’ve already fed over 3,000 people food," she said in another tweet.

Ramos says thousands have arrived, and thousands more are expected.

"Inside one of the three tents set up at the stadium - migrants get mats they can put on the floor and most fall right to sleep - for many it’s the first covered shelter they’ve had in weeks - but the tents are full and there are many more coming," she explained.

President Donald Trump has promised that the migrants will not be allowed into the United States, and has sent troops to the border to prevent the possibility.
