Jeff Flake says he will join Democrats against Trump — here's what he's planning

Outgoing Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) indicated that he was going to join with Democrats to block President Donald Trump from attempting to interfere with the Mueller investigation.

'It is more important than ever'

In a tweet Thursday, Flake said he would join his colleague and friend Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) to pass legislation meant to protect the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian election interference and alleged collusion with the Trump campaign.

"When the Senate convenes next week, @ChrisCoons and I will ask for unanimous consent to bring S.2644, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, to a vote on the Senate floor," he tweeted.

"After the firing of The AG, it is more important than ever to protect the Special Counsel," he added.

Flake was referring to the announcement of Jeff Sessions' resignation from his duties as U.S. Attorney General on Wednesday after the midterm elections.

On Wednesday, he explained in another tweet what the legislation would mean.

"Earlier this year, we passed S.2644, the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill would safeguard Robert Mueller’s investigation," he explained.

"Leader [Mitch] McConnell should bring the bill to the Senate floor as soon as possible," he added.

Critics of the president believe that he intends to stop the investigation into Russian interference because it might further implicate members of his former campaign and his administration. Trump has persistently complained and criticized the investigation as a "witch hunt."

Trump has also been at odds with Flake, who is a frequent critic of the president.

"I retired him. I'm very proud of it, I did the country a great service," the president said about Flake dismissively on Wednesday. "He is retired. I'd like to call it another word, but we're gonna treat him with great respect."
