Breaking: Michael Avenatti has been arrested - and TMZ has the sordid details

The celebrity gossip site TMZ is reporting that Michael Avenatti, the controversial lawyer for adult film worker Stormy Daniels, was arrested Wednesday for domestic violence.

"She hit me first!"

TMZ is citing law enforcement sources for their claim that a woman filed a felony domestic violence report against the attorney.

According to the report, the woman was seen running out of a high-end apartment complex in Century City, which is in Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday.

She was on the sidewalk with sunglasses covering her eyes, and screaming "I can't believe you did this to me!" into a cellphone.

Security reportedly ushered her into the building, after which Avenatti appeared and chased her while allegedly claiming, "she hit me first" and adding, "This is bulls***, this is f***ing bulls***."

TMZ says one witness said her face was swollen and bruised.

After the report surfaced, the Associated Press confirmed that Avenatti was in police custody.

TMZ had earlier reported that the woman was Avenatti's wife, but she denied the account completely, saying that she had not seen the attorney in several months. TMZ then changed their report to simply read that an unidentified woman made the report against Avenatti.

The combative attorney has been very aggressive in his efforts to aid the "resistance" movement against President Donald Trump, but many on the left are blaming him for overreaching in his attempt to tank the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Avenatti has also said that he is exploring the possibility of a presidential run to challenge President Trump in 2020. It is unclear how the alleged domestic violence charges might effect his presidential campaign.
