Jeff Flake takes drastic action against Trump after his bill to protect Mueller was defeated

Outgoing Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday that he would take a drastic action against President Donald Trump after his bill to protect the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller was blocked in Congress.

Here's what Flake is doing

Flake said that he would block all of the president's judicial appointees until his demand was met. He made the announcement after his bill was blocked by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Wednesday.

"One further not on this unanimous consent request that has just failed today," Flake said. "Senator Coons (D-Del.) and I are prepared to make it again and again until there is a vote on this vital bipartisan legislation on the Senate floor.

"And I have informed the majority leader that I will not vote to advance any of the 21 judicial nominees pending in the Judiciary Committee or vote to confirm the 32 judges awaiting confirmation on the Senate Floor until S. 2644 [the Mueller protection bill] is brought to the full Senate for a vote."

As the Republicans have only a one vote majority in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Flake could completely stop any judicial appointee.

The bill, called the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, would have ensured "that the Special Counsel can only be fired for good cause by a Senate-confirmed DOJ official," according to Senator Coons.

"We need to ensure not only that Special Counsel Mueller can complete his work without interference, but that special counsels in future investigations can, too," he added.

Flake signaled that he would push for the vote to protect Mueller after the results of the midterm elections.

Critics of the president believe that he is planning on intervening on Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference and alleged collusion with the Trump campaign. Calls to protect the probe increased after Trump fired Jeff Sessions from the U.S. Attorney General position, which would have overseen the probe if Sessions had not recused himself.
