Breaking: Rick Scott demands Bill Nelson concede after recount results - but it's not over yet

Despite the Republican candidate gaining in his vote count advantage in the U.S. Senate election, a manual recount has been called by the Florida secretary of state.

'It’s time to admit this race is over'

Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson is 12,000 votes behind Republican Gov. Rick Scott in the Senate election, but although the margin of his advantage has doubled from the election night count, it still falls within the 0.25 percent margin where a manual recount is required.

The margin was not met in the race for Florida's governorship between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum. DeSantis leads Gillum by a margin of 0.41 percent.

Gillum had rescinded his concession in hopes that he might prevail in the recount, but his hopes are dashed by the new results.

Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner called for the manual recount after Palm Beach County missed its 3 p.m. deadline to submit its results from their machine count of the votes.

"It was a heroic effort," said Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher. "We were adding our up our tallies and you can see they were adding up, but we just need some more time."

Bucher was assailed by many Republicans for their continual failures in meeting deadlines in the vote count. Palm Beach County was also sued by various news outlets when they threatened to arrest them for recording the vote count — the county lost that lawsuit and cameras were allowed in.

Gov. Scott called on Nelson to concede after the recount results showed his advantage growing.

"With the statewide machine recount finished," he tweeted, "our margin of victory has increased by nearly 1000 votes. @SenBillNelson, it’s time to admit this race is over."

Instead, Democratic lawyer Marc Elias replied that they would be filing lawsuits over the failed recount in Palm Beach County, a highly Democratic district.

"We have sued Palm Beach County and the Florida Sec of State to require a hand count of all ballots in the county due to systematic machine failure during the machine recount," tweeted Elias.
