Petition underway to posthumously award Parkland shooting hero the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Peter Wang died a hero at the tragic young age of just fifteen, when in February of 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Floriday, he bravely held an escape route open for others to get away with their lives as a gunman opened fire in the school. Seventeen people were killed that horrible day, incluging Wang.

Now Kyle Kashuv, one of the Parkland survivors, has started a petition to have Peter Wang awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Wang was a member of the school's JROTC program. He was posthumously accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for his bravery, and he and two other JROTC members who were also killed in the shooting were honored by the Florida National Guard. Alaina Petty, 14, and Martin Duque, 14, along with Peter, were awarded JROTC Heroism Medals.

At his petition, Kashuv appealed broadly and across the aisle. "Let's please join together, cross party lines, and ask President of the United States, Donald Trump,to posthumously award Peter the Presidential Medal of Freedom," he wrote.

Speaking to the Daily Wire, Kashuv added that "if you go through the past honorees, they’re all American heroes. Whether it’s sporting heroes, military heroes, musical heroes, etc. there’s no doubt in my mind that Peter belongs among those names and exulted even higher, to be honest.”

And cross party lines it did, with Ceny Uygur of The Young Turks and Sean Spicer, formerly of the Trump administration, both sharing the petition.

Over four thousand people have already signed the petition, which can be found here.
