Pro-Trump lawmaker declares campaign to unseat Justin Amash after he endorses impeachment

A firestorm of criticism against Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan followed upon his endorsement of impeachment against President Donald Trump, and he may lose his seat over it.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Amash said that his reading of the Mueller report led to his conclusion that Congress had a duty to impeach the president.

30 year-old Michigan state Rep. Jim Lower said that he would challenge Amash for the Republican primary after the impeachment tweets.

Lower said "absolutely" that Amash's support of impeachment was part of the reason he declared his campaign to unseat the Republican earlier than he had planned.

"After what happened on Saturday, it just made sense to get in right away and make sure people in the community knew there was a pro-Trump conservative ready to take him on," Lower said to the Detroit News.

"I just got tired of him attacking our president and not providing any real solutions to anything," he added.

Amash responded to critics of his rationale for supporting impeachment in another series of tweets on Monday.

The president himself excoriated Amash in a pair of tweets on Monday.

"Never a fan of @justinamash, a total lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies just for the sake of getting his name out there through controversy. If he actually read the biased Mueller Report, 'composed' by 18 Angry Dems who hated Trump, he would see that it was nevertheless strong on NO COLLUSION and, ultimately, NO OBSTRUCTION...Anyway, how do you Obstruct when there is no crime and, in fact, the crimes were committed by the other side? Justin is a loser who sadly plays right into our opponents hands!"
