Ocasio-Cortez accuses President Trump of putting 'millions of Americans in danger' with 'violent rhetoric'

"His rhetoric is endangering lots of people."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told reporters that President Donald Trump had put "millions of Americans" in danger with his "violent rhetoric" at a North Carolina rally.

"Well I think the president put millions of Americans in danger last night," Ocasio-Cortez said to reporters. "His rhetoric is endangering lots of people."

She could have been referring to criticism that the president lobbed at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) over her various controversial comments. The audience responded by chanting, "send her back" during the speech.

"This is not just about threats to individual members of Congress, but it is about creating a volatile environment in this country through violent rhetoric that puts anyone like Ilhan, anyone who believes in the rights of all people in danger," Ocasio-Cortez continued.

"And I think that he has a responsibility for that environment," she concluded.

The chant from the rally was immediately excoriated by many in the media and by Democrats, who pointed at Trump's previous statements as the impetus for the chant. The president responded by saying that he didn't support the chant and claiming that he tried to quiet the audience down by speaking more rapidly.

Some on social media pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez had been quoted in a manifesto left by an Antifa extremist activist who was killed committing an act of domestic terror at an ICE detention center. She had previously called the detention centers "concentration camps" before the attack.
