March 25, 2021
No people were injured in the incident
Authorities arrested 22-year-old Rico Marley after he reportedly entered an Atlanta, Georgia, Publix grocery store wearing body armor and with six guns on his person and carrying a cache of ammunition.
No shots were fired, and no people were injured in the incident.
What are the details?
On Thursday, ABC News reported that a customer spotted an armed Marley entering a public bathroom on Wednesday afternoon.
The customer notified management, who called authorities to the store to deal with Marley. When they arrived at the store, police arrested Marley as he tried to leave the bathroom.
Authorities charged Marley with reckless conduct, and he is set to undergo a mental health evaluation at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
On Thursday, however, WAGA-TV reporter Emilie Ikeda revealed that authorities upgraded Marley's charges to include possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempted to commit certain felonies, criminal attempt to commit a felony, and more.
The quick-thinking customer, identified by the outlet as Charles Russell, said that he immediately became concerned when he saw an armed Marley entering the bathroom.
"I saw an AR-15, and I was like ... you know, this kind of startled me, again, with the events that just recently happened in the grocery store up in Colorado," Russell said. "I went to the clerk at the customer service desk working at the time and let them know. It wasn't acted upon right away. It was actually taken a little more lightly than I thought it would be, especially with the recent events."
In a statement, a spokesperson for Publix said, "At Publix, the safety of our associates and customers is our priority. We are cooperating with local law enforcement on an incident that occurred earlier today in our Atlantic Station store. We are thankful that there were no injuries, and all were able to exit the store safely. The store is currently closed. Additional questions should be directed to the Atlanta Police Department."
The incident comes after a suspect opened fire on a Boulder, Colorado, grocery store, killing 10 people including a police officer.
Earlier this month, a suspect also opened fire on several spas in the Atlanta, Georgia, area, killing eight people.
Authorities were able to take both suspects into custody without incident.
