AG Barr responds to 'laughable' Pelosi accusation that he committed a crime — and warns Democrats

U.S. Attorney General William Barr responded by an accusation from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in a Fox News interview by saying that Democrats are afraid of what he's uncovering in his investigation.

"I think it's a laughable charge, and I think it's largely being made to try to discredit me partly because they may be concerned about the outcome of a review of what happened during the election," he said.

Barr was speaking to Bill Hemmer on Fox News when he made the comments. After the Mueller report was released, Barr opened an investigation into the FISA authorization of surveillance of members in the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

Pelosi said that Barr had committed perjury when he testified before Congress about a summary he made of the Mueller report and how the special counsel responded to it.

"The attorney general of the United States of America was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United States," Pelosi said. "That's a crime."

Despite Democrats' intention to hold Barr in contempt by a vote in the House of Representatives, a fact-check from CNN found that although he might have been slightly misleading, his statements do not rise to the exacting level of perjury.

Democrats were angered by the interview on Fox News and accused Barr of defending President Donald Trump's political interests instead of acting like the attorney general of the United States.

"It's stunning," responded Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Penn.). "This is the top law enforcement office of our country, of our nation, sounding more like the president in his obfuscating than a law enforcement— an impartial law enforcement officer."
