Buttigieg breaks silence on gruesome discovery at home of abortion doctor who practiced in South Bend

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg broke his silence about the horrific discovery of more than 2,200 fetal remains at the home of a late abortion doctor who practiced in his town.

"Like everyone, I find that news out of Illinois extremely disturbing," the Democratic presidential candidate said to reporters.

The family of Ulrich George Klopfer contacted authorities when they found 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains at his property in Illinois.

"And I think it's important that that be full investigated," Buttigieg added. "I also hope that it doesn't get caught up in politics at a time when women need access to healthcare. There's no question that what happened is disturbing, it's unacceptable and it needs to be looked at."

Klopfer passed away on September 3, and had his medical license suspended in 2015 after he neglected to properly report an abortion he had performed on a thirteen-year-old.

Authorities say the family is cooperating, and that they are investigating the matter.

Buttigieg is a vocal supporter of abortion. His presidential campaign experienced a brief surge in support, but has since dropped in the third tier of candidates, with only 5 percent of support in a recent poll.
